We were delighted to have  interviewed Caroline on her last day of her marketing internship on our farm earlier this month. Enjoy Caroline’s perspective of life before, during and after her internship at Alstede Farms.

Before

Caroline, a local high school graduate and current University student interned with us throughout the summer. Caroline has always loved baking and was looking forward to seeing how fruit is grown as she used it in her recipes and applied for the internship position on the farm. Caroline wanted to explore what life is like working on a farm while utilizing her skills for writing and photography during her break from college.

During

Alstede Farms provides internship opportunities to individuals looking to grow as professionals with the goal of imparting valuable real life work experience and exploration of potential career paths. Caroline assisted in the marketing department with advertising and promotional efforts while on summer break and said that her internship was “a fun, informative experience and I learned a lot”. Caroline acquired knowledge about the business of growing food during her employment on a real farm which has inspired her to eat more in season. Caroline assisted with the marketing department’s weekly eating in season feature highlighting the benefits of eating farm fresh year round and in doing so has learned to cook healthier foods and explore produce she has never tried before. She loved experimenting with our weekly recipes and tried replicating many of them at home for her family including these favorites: Sausage and Pepper Stuffed Peppers, Skillet Peach Pudding, Sweet Corn Caviar, while also exploring tomatillo salsa and husk cherries for the first time.

After

When asked what was the best part of her collective experience, she expressed that she will remember the fun stories she has to take away, in addition to how welcoming the team was toward her, and how cool it was to see an eggplant growing out in the field. “I got so many different experiences to bring back to college, like the ice cream 40th anniversary contest, planning a media day, photographing and picking fresh produce in the fields and so much more. I gained valuable experience and insights into farming and all the hard work and effort that goes into growing food”.

We all want to know!?! Will Caroline pursue marketing or farming as a career path? Caroline added, “Yes, the internship inspired me to explore writing and declare my Language, Communications & Media major which I was undecided prior to the internship”. Caroline is excited to be able to bring some of her favorite recipes back to college to share with her roommates and continue eating farm fresh.  We are grateful for Caroline’s help this summer and all wish her the best of luck this school year.
