The hot days of summer call for staying hydrated and preparing simple, easy, no-cook meals and it’s easy to do just that with these helpful hints from our farm kitchen.

Summertime is a time when produce is in great abundance here on our farm. Nature has a way of taking care of us and there is a reason why certain things come in season in Summer. Eating veggies that are high in water content, low in calories help maintain your body’s temperature. Eating foods in season also provide the salts and nutrients that our bodies need to replenish at this time of year.

Try adding some sliced fruit or veggies to your water to make drinking your water colorful and fun. Sliced cucumbers, blueberries, lemon, limes, or fresh mint make for a refreshing combination to flavor your water which may stimulate you to drink more. Freezing fruit or veggies in your ice cube trays and adding them to your water is another fun way to enjoy refreshing water-rich fruits and vegetables at this time.  Preparing raw meals is a great way to eat light and cool for summer. Try watermelon salads, variations on green salads, tomato salads and cool slaws for starters. Other meals include spiralizing summer squash or carrots to replace pasta or noodles in your favorite recipes.

Cucumbers are very refreshing to eat and provide nutrients and vitamins needed at this time of year. Try them in a cool yogurt and dill salad, or slicing thin and adding to vinegar and spices to create quick refrigerator pickles. The possibilities are endless and we are here to help. Best wishes from our farm kitchen to yours!
