Radishes are an annual, edible, root veggie in the Brassicaceae family. The word radish originated from the Latin word “Radix” meaning  root. Radish is related to kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and mustard greens. They all typically have a light colored flesh inside however the skin color may vary to include white, yellow, pink, purple, black and or red. They can also range in shape from cylindrical to tapered and long depending on the variety.

Radishes are said to be great at detoxifying the body as they contain powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that benefit the body. Radishes are adored for their peppery taste, crunchy texture and for their versatility in use. Radish can be eaten raw sliced or grated into a variety of salads, pickled or fermented and used as a condiment for tacos or burgers, added to sandwiches and wraps or used in spicy food to compliment flavors. Radishes are also great roasted or grilled and taste great used in a variety of soups or stews. While they are known for being eaten raw, radishes can be roasted, grilled, or used in a variety of unconventional ways such as toppings for risotto, added to tea sandwiches, or shaved thinly tossed with oil and vinegar and plated as an appetizer.

radish top soupWe also love that radishes store so easily and with duration.  Our culinary specialist recommends that you wash radishes first and remove the green from the top before placing the radishes in a zip top bag with a paper towel. They can be kept fresh in the fridge for up to ten days. If you pre-slice them make sure to store them in water in your fridge so they keep their color and crispness. Don’t throw away the tops! Make this wonderful radish top soup to use all the tops and bottoms! Here’s another fabulous radish salad recipe that is a must try featuring radishes and cucumbers and our own apple cider!
