Growing Resilient Food Systems

Researching Organic Raspberry Production in a Changing Climate.
We’re constantly seeking innovative ways to grow food more sustainably and resiliently, and a new research project spearheaded by Rebekah Alstede, owner and Assistant Farm Production Manager, is doing just that. Through a grant from SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education), we’re conducting a vital study on organic raspberry production using high tunnels to support farms in New Jersey and beyond.

Why does this matter? Farmers today face serious challenges: climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, and the costs of labor and land continue to rise. High tunnels offer a promising solution—they allow growers to extend the season and better manage temperature and moisture, which helps protect sensitive crops like raspberries from fungal diseases and pests brought on by heavy rains.

This study investigates the cultivation of both floricane and primocane raspberry varieties organically within a high tunnel system, while also evaluating sustainable weed management strategies by comparing straw, leaf mulch, and landscape fabric. Our goal is to find practical, cost-effective solutions that other small and mid-sized farms can adopt.

Organic weed control is especially labor-intensive, often making it a barrier for farmers looking to enter the organic market. By sharing the results of this project through farm tours and collaborations with Rutgers Cooperative Extension and other regional organizations, we hope to make certified organic fruit production more accessible, profitable, and environmentally sound.

As a woman- and family-owned farm growing over 250 crops on 800 acres of preserved land, Alstede Farms is committed to leading by example. This research reflects our belief that farming should be sustainable for the land, the farmer, and the future. Our findings won’t just support our farm—they’ll support the entire farming community.

Stay tuned as we continue on this journey to grow smarter, stronger, and together.
