Jumpstarting the Growing Season

Seed Starting, Greenhouse Prep & CSA Perks

While winter lingers outside, our farm is already buzzing with activity in preparation for the upcoming growing season. Our farm production team has been hard at work attending conferences, meeting industry colleagues, and learning about new farm equipment and techniques. Behind the scenes, we’ve been planting seeds, planning crop rotations, and coordinating with suppliers to ensure a smooth transition into the new season.

The Growing Season Has Already Begun!

The work on our farm never truly stops. Right after the holidays, we started our growing season by planting onions from seed, which will be transplanted outdoors as soon as the weather allows. Next came herbs, which are being grown in preparation for our CSA members’ potted plants—a beloved early-season perk! CSA members receive a new potted herb plant each week, perfect for adding fresh flavors to home-cooked meals.

While crops are being nurtured in our greenhouses, our team is also busy with equipment maintenance and improvements, ensuring everything is in top shape before spring. Pruning season is in full swing in the fields, beginning with our 45 acres of apples before moving on to over 30 acres of peaches. Soon, we’ll also be spreading compost and mulch as the snow melts, giving our soil the nutrients it needs to support healthy crops.

Tips for Home Gardeners: When to Start Seeds Indoors

If you’re an eager gardener, now is the perfect time to start planning your spring garden! Many vegetables and flowers can be started indoors, giving them a head start before transplanting outside when the weather warms up.

What to Plant Indoors Now?

Onions & Leeks – Start 8-10 weeks before your last expected frost.
Tomatoes & Peppers – Begin 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
Herbs (Basil, Parsley, Thyme) – Start 6-8 weeks ahead for a fragrant indoor herb garden.
Lettuce & Greens – These can be started indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting outside.

How to Successfully Start Seeds Indoors

Use quality seed-starting mix – It’s lighter than regular soil and helps with drainage.
Provide plenty of light – A sunny windowsill works, but grow lights ensure strong, healthy plants.
Keep soil consistently moist – Not too wet, not too dry.
Maintain the right temperature – Most seeds germinate best at 65-75°F.
Harden off seedlings – Before planting them outside, gradually expose them to outdoor conditions over a week.

By starting seeds indoors now, you’ll be setting yourself up for a strong and productive garden come spring! Stay tuned as we continue sharing updates from our greenhouses, orchards, and fields—the countdown to the growing season is on!
