Christmas time is the most wonderful time of the year and we want you to enjoy decorating your home to the fullest with our guide to Christmas tree care. It’s time to start selecting your tree if you have not already done so! The first step is to prepare your desired location in your home being sure to choose a spot away from heat and high light sources which could dry your tree prematurely. Choose a healthy tree from a reputable source (like us!) to ensure you are receiving a locally sourced, fresh cut tree. Decide which tree you and your family prefer. Here’s a helpful guide to the different types of trees that can be found on our farm. Fraser Fir, Concolor Fir, Douglas Fir, Colorado Blue Spruce are all excellent choices of trees for bringing inside your home.

Once you have selected your tree make sure a fresh cut is provided. Most tree farms and suppliers provide this service and if they don’t, just ask! A fresh cut is crucial to the longevity of your tree. We provide fresh cuts on all of our trees sold on our farm and typically remove ½” – 1” from the base of the trunk.

Now that you have selected a tree and have it home with you, place the tree in a study stand with a large water reservoir and fill with water above the cut trunk line. It’s important to water your tree as soon as you get home. If you don’t plan to set your tree up right away be sure to place your tree in a bucket of water until ready. Most experts agree that fresh water is all that is needed and none of the preservatives are necessary which is more of a pet friendly way to go.

Now it’s time to cut open the netting and allow the tree to rest so that the branches can unfold into place naturally. We recommend allowing the tree to rest for 24 hours to acclimate to it’s new climate. Make sure to continue watering as the tree will soak up lots of water at this stage. You may consider lowering the temperature in your room or use a humidifier to extend the life of your tree.

Once your tree has been decorated, continue to water it every day to ensure it stays fresh.  Recycle your tree after use by either chipping it into mulch or by participating in your town’s recycling program. You may also consider putting the tree outside for the Winter as a home for birds. This is especially helpful if you utilized string popcorn for garland or have used other edible decorations which can provide food and habitat for our furry friends.

Choosing a fresh cut, real Christmas tree will not only fill your home with a wonderful aroma, it is a more eco-friendly and sustainable option. Typically for every tree cut, tree farmers plant one to three seedlings in it’s place, according to data provided by the National Christmas Tree Association. Christmas trees are a slow growing crop often grown on land that may not be ideal for other crops and trees are a renewable resource with a smaller carbon footprint than artificial trees which is good news for Mother Earth!

We thank you for supporting local farmers with your purchase of a real, fresh cut tree!

Best wishes for a Merry Christmas from our family to yours!
