Strawberries are the first fruit to ripen on our farm and our first “pick your own” crop. We grow approximately 25 acres of strawberries on our 600 acres of farmland in both Chester & Washington Townships. Our strawberries are grown utilizing two techniques, matted row and raised bed. Matted row growing uses straw mulch in between the plants and is the traditional growing style. Raised beds, using plasticulture, is a newer technology that minimizes weeds and keeps soil temperatures consistent.  We like to use both methods to ensure a good harvest.

Strawberries are a perennial plant that is self fertile, although they do require a little help from wind and pollinators such as bees, birds & insects. Strawberries are members of the rose family and wear their seeds on the outside. Did you know that experts say there are approximately 200 seeds on the average berry?

Low in calories, high in vitamins and minerals, strawberries are the perfect treat anytime of the day. The best time to enjoy them is while they are in season in this area during late spring and early summer. There is nothing quite like the flavor of a field ripened, fresh picked strawberry. Strawberry Puff Pastry Tart

How do you know when a strawberry is ready for picking? Look for fully red berries with no white patches that slide off the stem with little or no tugging required.  Ripe berries will emit the sweetest fragrance telling you, and those garden critters, that they are ready to harvest and eat!

Strawberries are famous for their debut in jams, jellies and preserves, however, are really quite adaptable to a variety of recipes including sweet and savory dishes. Up and coming chefs are developing newer recipes that pair strawberries with cheeses, basil, chicken, salads, steak and so much more.

Our culinary & educational specialist has curated a simple and satisfying strawberry dessert for you utilizing pre-made puff pastry to have you enjoying dessert in no time. Get the recipe here
