Renewal, Resilience & Spring Holiday Inspiration

April brings with it a sense of renewal—trees begin to bud, the soil warms, and the quiet stillness of winter shifts into the hum of a new growing season. At the farm, we are in harmony with nature, and the signs of life emerging all around us bring fresh purpose. Our team has been busy tilling the soil and planting early crops, preparing for the abundance that spring promises.

But Mother Nature, as always, keeps us on our toes.

Staying One Step Ahead of the Weather

This week brought a dramatic swing in overnight temperatures, and our farm production team jumped into action to protect our most tender crops. Delicate blossoms on apricots, plums, pears, and apples are especially vulnerable to cold injury during these transitional weeks. To guard against frost damage, we activated our smudge pots in the apricot orchards and used orchard fans to circulate air and prevent frost from settling on blossoms in the apple and plum orchards.

We even brought in the big guns—our Frost Buster (aka Frost Dragon)—a powerful tool we added to our frost protection arsenal last season. It played a key role in safeguarding emerging buds. For our strawberry fields, our team carefully double-covered the plants with protective fabric to keep the soil warmth close and shield the new growth from overnight chill.

Thanks to the experience and quick thinking of our production managers, these protective steps ensured that what blooms now will become the fruit that feeds families later this year.

If you’re tending to a garden at home, now’s the time to bring tender plants inside on cold nights or provide them with extra cover. A little effort now goes a long way in protecting your spring garden.

Potato Kugel &  Orange Honey Glazed Carrots

Kugel is a baked casserole rooted in Jewish tradition, often enjoyed during Passover staple for Passover, especially with its dairy-free and flour-free variations, as noodles and sweets are avoided during the holiday. It can be made savory with potatoes or sweet with fruit and spices. Miss Jenn’s potato kugel features Alstede Fresh potatoes, farm eggs, onions, and chives—perfect as a side or hearty main dish.

For a sweet twist, skip the chives and add vanilla, cinnamon, honey, and apples or raisins for a more take on a classic dish. Pair it with Miss Jenn’s Orange Honey Glazed Carrots—a bright, simple side that perfectly complements the kugel for a full farm-to-fork experience.
