Spring Prep in Our Greenhouses and Fields
As the days grow longer and the first hints of spring begin to appear, our farm is coming back to life! While it may still feel like winter outside, behind the scenes, we’re busy waking up the land, preparing for another abundant growing season. From pruning fruit trees to seeding in our greenhouses, here’s a look at what’s happening on the farm this March.
Greenhouse Seeding: The First Signs of Spring
Our greenhouses are the first to wake up each season. Inside, trays of seedlings are carefully planted and nurtured, getting their start in a warm, controlled environment before they’re strong enough to be transplanted into the fields. Right now, we’re starting cool-weather crops like onions, lettuce, cabbage, and broccoli, along with herbs that will bring vibrant flavors to your farm recipes this summer.
Pruning: Setting Up for a Healthy Season
Pruning is a crucial part of orchard maintenance, and this is the perfect time to do it! Before the trees fully wake up and start growing, we shape them to allow for better airflow, sunlight penetration, and fruit production. We’re busy pruning our apple, peach and other fruit trees, ensuring they’ll produce strong, healthy fruit later in the season.
When Should Backyard Growers Prune Fruit Trees?
If you have fruit trees at home, late winter to early spring—before new growth begins—is the best time to prune. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Prune on a dry day to reduce the risk of disease.
Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to encourage good airflow.
Shape the tree for an open center or strong central leader, depending on the type of fruit tree.
Use sharp, clean tools to make precise cuts and prevent spreading disease.
Field Planning & Mulching: Preparing for Planting
Out in the fields, our team is finalizing crop plans and prepping the soil for planting. This includes adding nutrient-rich mulch to protect young plants, suppress weeds, and retain moisture as the weather warms up. Soon, the fields will be full of new life, but for now, it’s all about preparation!
Spring may still be around the corner, but here at the farm, we’re already in motion—growing, pruning, and preparing for another incredible season. Stay tuned as we continue to wake up the farm and bring fresh, local goodness your way!
